Letting go of control from "summary" of The Mindfulness Workbook for OCD by Jon Hershfield,Tom Corboy

The idea of letting go of control is a fundamental concept in managing OCD. It involves recognizing that trying to control our thoughts or feelings only serves to intensify them. When we attempt to suppress or control our obsessions, we inadvertently give them more power over us. This can lead to a vicious cycle of anxiety and distress. By practicing mindfulness, we can learn to observe our thoughts without trying to change or control them. This allows us to create some distance between ourselves and our obsessions. Instead of getting caught up in the content of our thoughts, we can simply acknowledge them as passing mental events. Letting go of control doesn't mean giving up or surrendering to OCD. It means accepting that we cannot always control our thoughts and feelings. When we stop struggling against them, we can start to break free from the grip of OCD. This shift in perspective can be incredibly empowering and liberating. Mindfulness teaches us to approach our thoughts with curiosity and openness, rather than judgment or resistance. When we let go of the need to control everything, we can begin to experience a sense of freedom and peace. This allows us to live more fully in the present moment, rather than being consumed by worries about the future or regrets about the past. As we practice letting go of control, we may notice that our obsessions lose their hold on us. We become less reactive to our thoughts and more able to respond to them with compassion and clarity. This can help us break the cycle of OCD and live a more fulfilling life.
