Mindfulness involves tuning into our bodies and emotions with awareness from "summary" of The Mindful Way Through Depression by Mark; Teasdale John; Segal Williams (Zindel; Kabat-Zinn, Jon)

Mindfulness is about being present in the moment, fully aware of what is happening both inside and outside of ourselves. It involves a deep connection with our bodies and emotions, tuning into them with a sense of curiosity and openness. This means paying attention to our physical sensations, such as tension in the muscles or a racing heartbeat, as well as our emotions, like sadness, anger, or joy. By bringing awareness to our bodies and emotions, we can start to recognize the patterns and triggers that contribute to our feelings of depression. We can begin to observe how certain thoughts or events impact our bodies and emotions, and how we tend to react in automatic ways. This heightened awareness allows us to step back and see things from a different perspective, creating space between ourselves and our thoughts and feelings. Through mindfulness, we can learn to respond to our bodies and emotions with kindness and compassion, rather than judgment or avoidance. Instead of getting caught up in a cycle of negative thoughts and emotions, we can observe them with a sense of detachment, acknowledging their presence without getting swept away by them. This shift in perspective can help us break free from the grip of depression and start to cultivate a greater sense of peace and well-being.
  1. We are able to connect more deeply with ourselves and our experiences. This allows us to navigate the ups and downs of life with greater ease and resilience. By practicing mindfulness, we can learn to embrace all aspects of ourselves – the light and the dark, the joy and the pain – with a sense of acceptance and equanimity. Ultimately, mindfulness offers us a powerful tool for transforming our relationship with depression and cultivating a sense of balance and wholeness in our lives.
