Mindfulness allows us to see beyond our depressive thoughts from "summary" of The Mindful Way Through Depression by Mark; Teasdale John; Segal Williams (Zindel; Kabat-Zinn, Jon)

When we are in the grip of depression, it can feel like our thoughts are all-consuming and overwhelming. Every thought that passes through our minds seems to reinforce our feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and despair. We get caught in a cycle of negative thinking that seems impossible to break. However, mindfulness offers us a way out of this cycle. By learning to practice mindfulness, we can develop the ability to step back from our thoughts and observe them with a sense of curiosity and detachment. This ability to observe our thoughts from a place of mindfulness allows us to see beyond the surface level of our depressive thoughts. We begin to recognize that our thoughts are just thoughts – they are not necessarily true or accurate reflections of reality. We see that our minds have a tendency to latch onto negative thoughts and beliefs, and that this is just a habit of the mind, not an objective truth.
