Environmental cues influence our habits from "summary" of The Habit by Susan Morse

Environmental cues play a significant role in shaping our habits. Our surroundings, whether at home, work, or in public spaces, provide us with cues that trigger our habitual behaviors. These cues can be subtle, like the smell of freshly baked cookies in the kitchen, or more obvious, like seeing a pack of cigarettes on the table. When we are exposed to these environmental cues repeatedly, they become ingrained in our subconscious mind. Over time, these cues can prompt us to engage in certain behaviors without us even realizing it. For example, if you have a habit of snacking while watching TV in the living room, simply being in that environment can trigger the urge to grab a snack, even if you're not hungry. Additionally, environmental cues can also help us form new habits. By strategically placing cues in our surroundings, we can create a conducive environment that supports the behaviors we want to cultivate. For instance, if you want to start exercising regularly, placing your workout clothes and shoes by the door can serve as a visual cue that reminds you to go for a run or hit the gym.
  1. We can take control of our actions and make positive changes in our lives. Ultimately, by harnessing the power of environmental cues, we can create a lifestyle that aligns with our goals and values.
