The pursuit of perfection can be damaging from "summary" of Scattered Minds by Gabor Maté, MD
The quest for perfection is a common human aspiration. We seek flawlessness in our work, our relationships, and ourselves. We believe that if we can just achieve perfection, we will finally be happy and fulfilled. However, this pursuit can be damaging. When we strive for perfection, we set ourselves up for failure. No matter how hard we try, we can never attain perfection. We will always fall short of our ideal, leading to feelings of inadequacy and disappointment. Perfectionism can also be paralyzing. We become so afraid of making mistakes that we are unable to take risks or try new things. We stick to what is safe and familiar, even if it means missing out on opportunities for growth and learning. Perfectionism can also cause us to become overly critical of ourselves and others. We nitpick every flaw and imperfection, turning a blind eye to the beauty and uniqueness that lies within each of us. In our relentless pursuit of perfection, we often sacrifice our mental and physical well-being. We push ourselves to the brink of exhaustion, obsessing over every detail and never allowing ourselves to rest. This constant stress and pressure can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Our relationships can also suffer as we become preoccupied with our own quest for perfection, neglecting the needs and feelings of those around us.- The pursuit of perfection is a fruitless endeavor. We will never be able to achieve perfection, no matter how hard we try. Instead of striving for an unattainable ideal, we should focus on self-compassion and acceptance. Embracing our flaws and imperfections is what makes us truly human. It is through our imperfections that we find our strength and resilience. By letting go of our need for perfection, we can find true happiness and fulfillment in the imperfect, messy, and beautiful journey of life.
