Use traditional wisdom as a guide from "summary" of In Defence of Food by Michael Pollan

We are living in a world where food choices can often feel overwhelming. With so many conflicting messages coming from experts, scientists, and food marketers, it can be hard to know what to believe. In times like these, turning to traditional wisdom can provide a valuable guide. Throughout history, humans have relied on traditional foodways to nourish themselves and stay healthy. These food traditions have been passed down from generation to generation, honed through trial and error, and shaped by cultural beliefs and practices. In many ways, traditional wisdom represents a collective knowledge that has stood the test of time. While it is true that modern science has brought many advances in our understanding of nutrition, it is also true that traditional foodways have much to teach us. Traditional diets, such as the Mediterranean diet or the Japanese diet, have been linked to lower rates of chronic diseases and longer life expectancy. These diets are characterized by whole, minimally processed foods, a focus on plant-based foods, and an emphasis on communal eating. By looking to traditional foodways, we can learn valuable lessons about what constitutes a healthy diet. Traditional diets tend to be rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes – all foods that have been shown to have numerous health benefits. They also tend to be lower in processed foods, added sugars, and unhealthy fats, which have been linked to a host of health problems. In a world where food trends come and go, traditional wisdom can provide a grounding force. By incorporating elements of traditional diets into our own eating habits, we can tap into a wealth of knowledge that has been cultivated over centuries. In doing so, we can nourish our bodies, support our health, and connect with a deeper sense of culinary heritage.
