Genetics influence happiness to some extent from "summary" of Happiness by Daniel Nettle

The idea that our genes play a role in shaping our happiness is a fascinating one. Research suggests that there is a genetic component to happiness, meaning that the level of happiness we experience may be partially determined by our genetic makeup. This does not mean that our happiness is entirely predetermined by our genes, but rather that they can influence our predisposition towards experiencing positive emotions. Studies have shown that identical twins, who share the same genetic material, tend to have more similar levels of happiness compared to fraternal twins, who only share about half of their genes. This indicates that there is a hereditary factor at play when it comes to happiness. However, this does not mean that our genes are the sole determinants of our happiness. Environmental factors, such as our upbringing, relationships, and life circumstances, also play a significant role in shaping our overall well-being. It is important to note that while genetics may influence our baseline level of happiness, it is not set in stone. We have the ability to make choices and engage in behaviors that can positively impact our happiness levels. For example, engaging in activities that bring us joy, cultivating strong relationships, and practicing gratitude and mindfulness can all contribute to a greater sense of well-being.
  1. We can take a more holistic approach to enhancing our well-being. Ultimately, while our genetic makeup may contribute to our happiness to some extent, it is our individual choices and actions that have the power to shape our overall emotional experience.
