Flow requires a balance between skill and challenge from "summary" of Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

When we are in a state of flow, we experience a sense of deep concentration and complete absorption in the task at hand. This state is characterized by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. Flow occurs when we are fully immersed in what we are doing, losing track of time and self-consciousness. In order to achieve flow, there must be a balance between the level of challenge presented by the task and our own skill level. If the challenge of the task is too high in relation to our skill level, we may feel anxious, overwhelmed, and frustrated. On the other hand, if the task is too easy, we may become bored, apathetic, and disengaged. In both cases, the mismatch between challenge and skill prevents us from experiencing flow. Flow arises when the challenge of the task is just right for our level of skill. When the challenge is perfectly matched to our abilities, we enter a state of flow where our skills are fully engaged and we are able to perform at our best. In this state, we experience a sense of effortless action, deep concentration, and a feeling of control over our actions. Flow is not only enjoyable, but it also leads to increased performance, creativity, and satisfaction. In order to achieve flow on a regular basis, it is important to continually challenge ourselves to grow and develop our skills. By seeking out tasks that are slightly beyond our current abilities, we can push ourselves to reach new levels of achievement and experience the benefits of flow. Flow is not a static state, but rather a dynamic process that requires us to continually adapt and improve in order to maintain the delicate balance between challenge and skill.
