Mental exercises can enhance brain function from "summary" of Change Your Brain, Change Your Body by Daniel G. Amen

One of the most powerful tools we have for improving brain function is mental exercises. Just as physical exercise can strengthen our muscles, mental exercises can enhance the functioning of our brain. When we engage in challenging activities that require us to think critically, problem-solve, or learn something new, we are essentially giving our brain a workout. By challenging our brain in this way, we are able to create new neural pathways and connections. This can improve our cognitive function, memory, and overall brain health. In fact, studies have shown that individuals who regularly engage in mentally stimulating activities have a lower risk of developing cognitive decline and dementia as they age. There are many different types of mental exercises that can help improve brain function. These can include activities such as puzzles, brain teasers, learning a new language, or even playing musical instruments. The key is to find activities that are challenging and engaging for you personally. In addition to improving cognitive function, mental exercises can also have a positive impact on our mood and overall wellbeing. When we challenge our brain and learn new things, our brain releases chemicals such as dopamine and endorphins, which are associated with feelings of pleasure and happiness.
  1. The next time you find yourself bored or with some free time on your hands, consider engaging in a mentally stimulating activity. Not only will you be giving your brain a workout, but you may also experience improvements in your cognitive function, memory, and mood. Ultimately, mental exercises can be a powerful tool for enhancing brain function and improving overall brain health.
