The importance of the diaphragm in breathing from "summary" of Breath by James Nestor

The diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the ribcage, is an essential player in the act of breathing. When we inhale, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, creating a vacuum that pulls air into the lungs. This action allows the lungs to expand fully and take in the optimal amount of oxygen. Without the diaphragm's involvement, our breathing would be shallow and inefficient. Proper diaphragmatic breathing not only ensures that we are getting enough oxygen into our bodies but also helps to reduce stress and anxiety. By engaging the diaphragm, we activate the body's relaxation response, which can have a calming effect on the nervous system. This type of breathing has been shown to lower heart rate, decrease blood pressure, and improve overall well-being. Unfortunately, many people do not utilize their diaphragm effectively when breathing. Modern lifestyles that involve sitting for long periods and slouching can lead to poor breathing habits. Shallow chest breathing becomes the norm, leading to decreased oxygen intake and increased stress levels. By retraining ourselves to breathe using the diaphragm, we can reverse these negative effects and improve our health and quality of life. Simple exercises, such as lying on your back and placing a hand on your abdomen to feel the rise and fall as you breathe, can help to reconnect you with your diaphragm. Over time, with practice and mindfulness, diaphragmatic breathing can become second nature, allowing you to experience the benefits of efficient and effective breathing. By giving the diaphragm the attention it deserves, we can unlock the power of our breath and improve our physical and mental well-being.
