Smoking is an illusion of enjoyment from "summary" of Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr

Smoking is an illusion of enjoyment. That is the one concept that most smokers find difficult to believe. The idea that smoking provides any sort of pleasure or enjoyment seems so ingrained in our minds that we can't imagine life without it. Yet, if you take a step back and really think about it, you'll start to see that smoking is nothing more than an illusion. Think about the first cigarette you ever smoked. Do you remember how awful it tasted? How it made you cough and choke? You probably thought to yourself, "Why would anyone do this to themselves?" But, because everyone around you was doing it, you persisted. You kept smoking, thinking that eventually, you would come to enjoy it. And over time, you did start to convince yourself that smoking was pleasurable. But if you really think about it, what pleasure does smoking actually provide? Does it taste good? No, it tastes terrible. Does it make you feel good? No, it makes you feel sick and dizzy. Does it relax you? No, it actually increases your stress levels. So where is this enjoyment that smokers claim to get from their cigarettes? It simply doesn't exist. The truth is, smoking only provides temporary relief from the nicotine withdrawal symptoms that it creates. When you smoke a cigarette, you are not satisfying a craving or fulfilling a need. You are simply alleviating the discomfort caused by the previous cigarette. It's a never-ending cycle of addiction and withdrawal that keeps you trapped in a state of perpetual craving. Once you realize that smoking is an illusion of enjoyment, you can start to see through the lies that nicotine has been telling you. You can break free from the cycle of addiction and discover the true pleasure of a life without cigarettes. So the next time you reach for a cigarette, ask yourself: is this really bringing me joy, or am I just falling for the illusion once again?
