Meditation is a practice of awareness from "summary" of A Beginner's Guide to Meditation by Rod Meade Sperry,Editors of the Shambhala Sun

Meditation is often described as a practice of awareness. But what does that really mean? It means being fully present in the moment, paying attention to what is happening both internally and externally. It means observing thoughts, emotions, and sensations without judgment, simply noticing them as they arise and pass away. Through the practice of meditation, we learn to cultivate a sense of mindfulness, a state of open and nonjudgmental awareness. This awareness allows us to see things as they truly are, rather than how we perceive them to be. It helps us to break free from the constant stream of thoughts and distractions that can cloud our minds and prevent us from experiencing life as it unfolds. By becoming more aware of our thoughts and emotions, we can begin to understand the patterns and habits that shape our lives. We can start to see how our reactions to situations are often based on unconscious beliefs and conditioning. With this awareness, we can begin to make more conscious choices and respond to life in a way that is more aligned with our true values and intentions. Meditation also helps us to develop a greater sense of compassion and empathy towards ourselves and others. By practicing awareness and mindfulness, we can learn to approach ourselves with kindness and understanding, rather than harsh self-criticism. This same sense of compassion can then extend to those around us, as we begin to see the common humanity that connects us all.
  1. Meditation is a practice of deepening our connection to ourselves and the world around us. It is a journey of self-discovery and self-transformation, as we learn to let go of limiting beliefs and conditioning and open ourselves up to the fullness of life. Through the practice of awareness, we can cultivate a greater sense of peace, clarity, and purpose in our lives.
