Stress negatively impacts memory retention from "summary" of Unlimited Memory by Kevin Horsley

When stress levels are high, our brains are flooded with cortisol, a hormone that can interfere with the way memories are formed and stored. This means that when we are stressed, it becomes much more difficult for us to retain new information. In fact, research has shown that chronic stress can actually shrink the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for storing memories. Furthermore, when we are stressed, our brains prioritize survival over memory retention. This means that when we are in a state of stress, our brains are much more likely to focus on immediate threats rather than committing new information to memory. This can be a major hindrance when it comes to learning new things or trying to remember important details. In addition to impacting our ability to retain new information, stress can also affect our ability to recall information that we have already learned. When we are stressed, our brains are much more likely to focus on negative memories rather than positive ones. This can make it difficult to access important information when we need it, as our brains are too preoccupied with stress-induced negative thoughts.
  1. It is clear that stress can have a major impact on our memory retention. By managing our stress levels and finding healthy ways to cope with stress, we can improve our ability to learn new things and remember important information. It is essential to prioritize stress management in order to optimize our memory retention and cognitive function.
