Power dynamics may be influenced by nonverbal cues in leadership interactions from "summary" of The Silent Language of Leaders by Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D.

In leadership interactions, nonverbal cues play a significant role in shaping power dynamics. These cues can be subtle, yet they have a powerful impact on how leaders are perceived by others in the organization. For example, something as simple as maintaining eye contact can convey confidence and authority, while avoiding eye contact may signal insecurity or lack of interest. Body language also plays a crucial role in leadership interactions. The way a leader carries themselves, their posture, gestures, and facial expressions all communicate important messages to their team members. A leader who stands tall with open body language is often perceived as more confident and competent, whereas someone who slouches or fidgets may be seen as unsure or unprepared. Moreover, vocal cues such as tone of voice, volume, and pace of speech can influence power dynamics in leadership interactions. A leader who speaks in a calm, measured tone is more likely to be viewed as in control and authoritative, whereas someone who raises their voice or speaks too quickly may come across as aggressive or overwhelmed. In addition to nonverbal cues, the use of personal space can also impact power dynamics in leadership interactions. Leaders who invade others' personal space may be seen as intrusive or domineering, while those who respect boundaries are often perceived as respectful and trustworthy.
  1. It is essential for leaders to be aware of the nonverbal cues they are sending in their interactions with others. By understanding how body language, vocal cues, and personal space can influence power dynamics, leaders can learn to communicate more effectively and establish themselves as strong, confident leaders in the organization.
