Use everyday tasks as opportunities for mindfulness practice from "summary" of The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh

When we talk about mindfulness practice, we often think of sitting meditation or other formal practices. However, mindfulness can be cultivated in every moment of our daily lives, even in the midst of ordinary tasks. It is not necessary to set aside special time for meditation. Instead, we can use the activities we already engage in as opportunities to practice mindfulness. For example, when washing the dishes, instead of rushing through the task in order to move on to the next thing, we can focus on the sensations of the water, the soap, and the dishes themselves. We can pay attention to our breathing and the movements of our body as we wash each dish. By bringing our full awareness to the present moment, we can transform a mundane chore into a mindful practice. Similarly, when we are walking from one place to another, we can pay attention to each step we take. We can feel the ground beneath our feet, the air on our skin, and the sights and sounds around us. We can let go of our worries about the future or regrets about the past, and simply be present with each step we take. In this way, every moment of our day can become an opportunity for mindfulness practice. We don't need to seek out special experiences or set aside specific time for meditation. Instead, we can simply bring our full attention to whatever we are doing, whether it is washing the dishes, walking, or any other activity. By cultivating mindfulness in this way, we can learn to be fully present in each moment of our lives. We can let go of distractions and worries, and experience a deep sense of peace and contentment. Mindfulness practice is not about achieving a particular state of mind; it is about learning to be present with whatever is happening right now. Through this practice, we can discover the miracle of mindfulness in the midst of our everyday lives.
