Let go of the need for perfection in your practice from "summary" of The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness by Andy Puddicombe

When we first start to meditate, it’s easy to get caught up in wanting everything to be just right. We might set high expectations for ourselves, thinking that we need to achieve a certain level of perfection in our practice. We might become frustrated if we can’t seem to quiet our minds or if we can’t sit still for very long. But the truth is, meditation isn’t about achieving perfection. It’s about learning to be okay with whatever arises in our practice. When we let go of the need for perfection, we allow ourselves to be more present in the moment. We can start to appreciate each meditation session for what it is, rather than focusing on what it isn’t. By accepting that our minds will wander and that our bodies may fidget, we can cultivate a sense of compassion and understanding towards ourselves. We can begin to see that there is no right or wrong way to meditate, only the way that works best for us. When we stop striving for perfection, we can open ourselves up to the beauty of imperfection. We can embrace the messiness of our thoughts and emotions, knowing that this is all a natural part of the human experience. Instead of judging ourselves for not meditating “correctly,” we can simply observe what is happening in our minds without attaching any labels or expectations to it. This sense of non-judgmental awareness is key to developing a more mindful and compassionate attitude towards ourselves and others. So, the next time you sit down to meditate, remember that it’s okay to let go of the need for perfection. Allow yourself to be exactly as you are in that moment, without trying to change or fix anything. Embrace the imperfections, the distractions, and the challenges that come up during your practice. And most importantly, be kind to yourself throughout the process. By releasing the grip of perfectionism, you can truly experience the peace and clarity that meditation has to offer.
