Negative selftalk can be damaging from "summary" of The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz,Janet Mills

Negative self-talk can be compared to a virus that invades the mind. It is like a seed that is planted in our consciousness and grows over time, taking root and spreading its toxic effects throughout our being. This internal dialogue can be relentless, wearing us down with its constant criticism and judgments. It can shape our beliefs about ourselves, coloring our perceptions and influencing our actions. The danger of negative self-talk lies in its ability to limit our potential and hinder our personal growth. When we constantly berate ourselves with harsh words and destructive thoughts, we are essentially sabotaging our own well-being. This self-inflicted harm can manifest in various ways, from eroding our self-confidence to creating barriers to our success. Moreover, negative self-talk can become ingrained in our psyche, becoming a habitual pattern of thinking that is difficult to break. Like a well-worn path in the forest, our minds can become accustomed to traversing the same negative thoughts, reinforcing them with each repetition. This cycle of self-criticism can create a cycle of suffering that becomes increasingly difficult to escape. In order to combat the damaging effects of negative self-talk, we must first become aware of its presence in our lives. By observing our thoughts and recognizing when they turn negative, we can begin to challenge and reframe them. We can choose to replace self-defeating thoughts with more empowering and compassionate ones, cultivating a mindset that is supportive and nurturing. By practicing self-awareness and self-compassion, we can gradually shift our internal dialogue from one of criticism to one of kindness. We can learn to treat ourselves with the same level of care and respect that we would offer to a loved one. In doing so, we can break free from the grip of negative self-talk and embrace a more positive and empowering way of thinking.
