Processed foods and sugary drinks contribute to insulin resistance from "summary" of The Diabetes Code by Dr. Jason Fung

Processed foods and sugary drinks are significant culprits in the development of insulin resistance. These types of foods are high in refined carbohydrates, unhealthy fats, and added sugars, which wreak havoc on our insulin levels. When we consume these foods, our blood sugar spikes, causing the pancreas to release insulin to help regulate it. Over time, however, constant consumption of processed foods and sugary drinks can lead to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance occurs when the body's cells become less responsive to insulin, making it harder for glucose to enter the cells. As a result, the pancreas must produce more insulin to try to compensate. This vicious cycle can eventually lead to prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and a host of other metabolic problems. Processed foods and sugary drinks are particularly harmful because they lack essential nutrients and fiber, leading to rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar levels. Furthermore, these foods are highly palatable and addictive, making it easy to overconsume them. The more we consume processed foods and sugary drinks, the more insulin our bodies need to produce, further perpetuating insulin resistance. This can create a dangerous cycle that is difficult to break without making significant changes to our diet and lifestyle.
  1. It is crucial to limit our intake of processed foods and sugary drinks. Instead, we should focus on consuming whole, nutrient-dense foods that are high in fiber, protein, and healthy fats. By making these dietary changes, we can help stabilize our blood sugar levels, reduce our insulin resistance, and improve our overall metabolic health. Ultimately, by understanding the detrimental effects of processed foods and sugary drinks on insulin resistance, we can take proactive steps to protect our health and well-being.
