Coddling students leads to fragility from "summary" of The Coddling of the American Mind by Jonathan Haidt,Greg Lukianoff

When we shield students from discomforting ideas and experiences, we inadvertently hinder their ability to cope with challenges and setbacks. By constantly protecting them from adversity, we prevent them from developing resilience and emotional strength. This overprotection creates a generation of individuals who are ill-equipped to navigate the complexities of the real world. Instead of fostering independence and self-reliance, we foster dependence and fragility. When students are shielded from differing viewpoints and controversial discussions, they miss out on valuable opportunities for growth and learning. Exposure to diverse opinions and perspectives is essential for intellectual development and critical thinking skills. By sheltering students from opposing views, we deny them the chance to engage in meaningful dialogue and expand their understanding of the world. This lack of exposure results in a narrow-mindedness that stifles intellectual curiosity and inhibits personal growth. In an attempt to shield students from discomfort, we inadvertently stifle their intellectual growth and emotional resilience. By avoiding challenging conversations and difficult topics, we hinder their ability to think critically and confront adversity. This avoidance of discomfort only serves to reinforce their fragility and weaken their ability to navigate the complexities of the real world. It is through facing challenges and grappling with uncomfortable ideas that students develop the resilience and strength needed to thrive in an ever-changing society. The consequences of coddling students are far-reaching and detrimental. By sheltering them from discomfort and adversity, we deprive them of the opportunity to grow and develop into well-rounded individuals. Without the ability to confront challenges and overcome obstacles, students are ill-prepared for the realities of adulthood. It is only through exposure to discomfort and adversity that individuals can truly develop the resilience and strength needed to succeed in life.
