The brain can rewire itself in response to new experiences from "summary" of The Brain by David Eagleman

One of the most remarkable features of the brain is its ability to adapt and change in response to new experiences. This phenomenon is known as neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity allows the brain to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. When we encounter new information or learn new skills, our brain cells communicate with each other, strengthening existing connections and forming new ones. This process enables us to learn and remember new things, as well as adapt to changes in our environment. For example, studies have shown that London taxi drivers, who undergo extensive training to memorize the city's complex street layout, have larger hippocampi – the part of the brain involved in spatial memory – compared to the general population. This structural change in the brain is a result of the drivers' experiences navigating the city day in and day out. Furthermore, neuroplasticity plays a crucial role in recovery from brain injuries. When a part of the brain is damaged, other areas can sometimes take over the functions of the injured region. This process, known as functional reorganization, allows individuals to regain lost abilities through rehabilitation and practice.
  1. The brain's ability to rewire itself in response to new experiences is a testament to its incredible flexibility and adaptability. By understanding the mechanisms of neuroplasticity, researchers and clinicians can develop innovative therapies to enhance learning, memory, and recovery from brain injuries. The brain's plasticity offers hope for those facing neurological challenges, highlighting the remarkable resilience of the human brain.
