Environmental cues can trigger habit responses from "summary" of Summary of "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg by Lea Schullery
According to Duhigg, our habits are often triggered by environmental cues. For example, when you walk into a movie theater, the smell of popcorn triggers the habit of buying a bag, even if you weren't planning on it. This is because your brain has associated the smell of popcorn with the habit of buying and eating it. In this way, our environment plays a significant role in shaping our habits. Duhigg explains that these environmental cues trigger a three-step process in our brains: cue, routine, reward. The cue is the trigger that tells your brain to go into autopilot and which habit to use. The routine is the behavior itself, which can be physical, mental, or emotional. And finally, the reward is what your brain receives from the routine. It could be anything from a physical reward, like the taste of popcorn, to an emotional reward, like stress relief. By understanding this process, we can start to change our habits by manipulating the cues that trigger them. For example, if you want to stop eating popcorn at the movies, you could try avoiding the concession stand altogether. By removing the cue, you can disrupt the habit loop and eventually replace it with a new one. Duhigg also discusses the concept of habit stacking, which involves linking a new habit to an existing one. For example, if you want to start flossing your teeth every night, you could link it to the habit of brushing your teeth. By stacking the new habit on top of an existing one, you can take advantage of the environmental cues that already trigger the existing habit.- Duhigg emphasizes the importance of understanding how environmental cues influence our habits. By recognizing these triggers and manipulating them, we can start to change our habits and create healthier routines.
