The Stoic idea of living in harmony with the cosmos was central to their philosophy from "summary" of Stoicism by John Sellars

The Stoics believed that the cosmos was a rational and ordered system, governed by divine reason, which they referred to as logos. This divine reason was immanent in the world and suffused all things, shaping the natural order of the universe. To live in harmony with the cosmos, therefore, meant to align one's inner rational principle, or logos, with the universal logos that governed the world. This alignment required cultivating virtues such as wisdom, courage, justice, and self-discipline, which enabled individuals to live in accordance with nature and fulfill their role within the cosmic order. By living virtuously and in harmony with the cosmos, the Stoics believed that one could achieve tranquility and peace of mind, regardless of external circumstances. The Stoic idea of living in harmony with the cosmos was not a passive acceptance of fate, but an active engagement with the world in accordance with reason and virtue. It involved accepting what was beyond one's control, while focusing on what one could control – namely, one's thoughts, desires, and actions. According to the Stoics, living in harmony with the cosmos required accepting the interconnectedness of all things and recognizing one's place within the larger scheme of the universe. This cosmic perspective encouraged a sense of humility and gratitude, as individuals acknowledged their dependence on and connection to the world around them.
  1. The Stoic goal of living in harmony with the cosmos was to cultivate a sense of inner peace and equanimity, regardless of external circumstances. By aligning one's will with the divine reason that governed the universe, individuals could navigate life's challenges with wisdom, resilience, and grace.
