Hormones can impact sexual desire from "summary" of Sex on the Brain by Deborah Blum

Hormones play a crucial role in regulating sexual desire. These chemical messengers produced by various glands in our body act as the driving force behind our urges and behaviors. For instance, testosterone, often associated with masculinity, is responsible for fueling sexual desire in both men and women. In men, testosterone is primarily produced in the testes and plays a key role in maintaining sexual function and libido. When testosterone levels are low, it can lead to a decrease in sexual desire and performance. On the other hand, in women, testosterone is produced in smaller amounts in the ovaries and adrenal glands. However, even this small amount can influence sexual desire and arousal. Another important hormone in the realm of sexual desire is estrogen. Estrogen, predominantly found in women, helps regulate the menstrual cycle and is crucial for sexual health. Fluctuations in estrogen levels, such as during menopause, can lead to a decrease in sexual desire and arousal. In addition to testosterone and estrogen, other hormones like oxytocin and vasopressin also play a role in sexual behavior. Oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone," is released during intimate moments and helps foster feelings of trust and bonding. Vasopressin, on the other hand, is associated with monogamy and pair bonding in males.
  1. Hormones serve as the intricate web that connects our physiological processes with our psychological experiences. They influence our sexual desires, behaviors, and responses in complex ways that continue to be the subject of scientific exploration and inquiry. Understanding the impact of hormones on sexual desire can provide valuable insights into human sexuality and relationships.
