The industry knowingly disregards health consequences from "summary" of Salt Sugar Fat by Michael Moss

Through my research and interviews with industry insiders, it has become abundantly clear that the food industry is well aware of the health consequences of their products. Despite this knowledge, they choose to ignore the detrimental impact that excessive amounts of salt, sugar, and fat can have on consumers' health. In fact, many companies have conducted their own studies that confirm the link between their products and health issues such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. These studies are often kept under wraps, hidden from public view to avoid potential backlash and maintain their profits. One former executive I spoke to admitted that the industry is fully aware of the addictive nature of salt, sugar, and fat. They deliberately engineer their products to be irresistible, hooking consumers and ensuring repeat purchases. This manipulation of consumers' taste buds comes at a great cost to their health, but the industry prioritizes profits over well-being. Not only do food companies turn a blind eye to the health consequences of their products, but they also actively work to undermine efforts to regulate or limit their use of salt, sugar, and fat. Lobbying efforts and intense political pressure are used to sway lawmakers and prevent any meaningful change that could threaten their bottom line.
