Redefining happiness from "summary" of Riding the Bus with My Sister by Rachel Simon

In my journey alongside my sister, Beth, I have come to realize that happiness is not always found in the places we expect. Beth, with her developmental disabilities, has taught me that true happiness is not about material possessions or societal expectations. It is about finding joy in the simple moments, the little victories, the connections we make with others. Beth finds happiness in the routine of taking the bus every day, in the familiar faces she sees, in the conversations she has with strangers. She shows me that happiness is not about grand gestures but about finding contentment in the everyday moments that make up our lives. Through Beth's eyes, I have learned to redefine my own understanding of happiness. It is not about achieving some idealized version of success or constantly chasing after the next big thing. It is about being present in the moment, finding gratitude for what we have, and cherishing the relationships that bring us joy. Redefining happiness means letting go of societal pressures and expectations, and instead focusing on what truly brings us fulfillment. It means finding happiness in the small things, in the moments of connection and love that make life worth living. Beth has shown me that true happiness is not a destination to reach but a journey to be experienced with an open heart and a grateful spirit.
