Letting go of expectations frees us from disappointment from "summary" of Real Happiness by Sharon Salzberg

Expectations can be a source of great suffering in our lives. When we hold tightly to specific outcomes, we set ourselves up for disappointment when things don't go as planned. We may have a vision of how things should be, and when reality doesn't match that vision, we feel let down. This cycle of expectation and disappointment can lead to frustration, resentment, and even despair. By learning to let go of expectations, we can free ourselves from the grip of disappointment. This doesn't mean giving up on our goals or desires, but rather releasing our attachment to how things "should" be. When we loosen our hold on specific outcomes, we open ourselves up to the possibility of experiencing things as they are, rather than as we wish them to be. Letting go of expectations allows us to be more present in each moment. Instead of being lost in thoughts of the future or past, we can fully engage with what is happening right now. This presence brings a sense of peace and contentment, as we let go of the need for things to be different than they are. When we stop clinging to expectations, we also become more resilient in the face of change and uncertainty. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and when we are able to adapt and flow with these changes, we can navigate challenges with grace and ease. By releasing our attachment to specific outcomes, we create space for new possibilities to emerge.
  1. Letting go of expectations can bring a sense of freedom and liberation. We no longer feel bound by the limitations of our own desires and preconceived notions. Instead, we can embrace the unknown with curiosity and openness, trusting that whatever unfolds is ultimately for our highest good. By releasing our expectations, we allow room for joy, wonder, and delight to enter our lives.
