Prioritizing self-care is critical for our well-being. It is about recognizing that we are worthy of care and attention, just like anyone else. It is like trying to drive a car that has run out of gas – we simply cannot go very far without refueling. Self-care is not a luxury; it is a necessity. It is the foundation upon which everything else in our lives is built. Without taking care of ourselves first, we cannot expect to be able to take care of others effectively. It is like the oxygen mask on an airplane – we must secure our own before helping those around us. One of the most common barriers to self-care is the belief that we do not have enough time. We are so busy taking care of everyone and everything else that we forget to take care of ourselves.
