During tough times, it's easy to be hard on yourself. You might criticize yourself for not being strong enough, smart enough, or capable enough to handle the situation. You might tell yourself you should have seen it coming, or you should have done something differently. You might beat yourself up for feeling sad, anxious, or scared. But being hard on yourself won't help you get through tough times. In fact, it will likely make things worse. Instead of being critical of yourself, practice self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would offer to a good friend going through a hard time. Acknowledge your pain and suffering without judgment. Remind yourself that it's okay to struggle, that it's natural to feel a range of emotions during difficult times.
