Overcoming selfdeception requires self-reflection and introspection from "summary" of Leadership and Self-deception by Arbinger Institute

When we find ourselves in a state of self-deception, we are essentially lying to ourselves about the reality of a situation. This can happen when we are faced with a dilemma or a conflict that we would rather not confront. Instead of acknowledging the truth, we deceive ourselves into believing a distorted version of reality that is more palatable to us. This self-deception can have serious consequences, not only for ourselves but also for those around us. Overcoming self-deception is not an easy task. It requires a willingness to engage in self-reflection and introspection, to look inward and confront the uncomfortable truths that we have been avoiding. This process can be challenging and even painful, as it forces us to confront our own shortcomings and mistakes. However, it is only by facing these truths that we can begin to overcome our self-deception and move towards a more authentic way of living. Self-reflection involves taking the time to examine our thoughts, feelings, and actions with honesty and openness. It requires us to question our assumptions and beliefs, to consider alternative perspectives, and to be willing to admit when we are wrong. Introspection, on the other hand, involves looking deep within ourselves to understand the underlying motives and fears that may be driving our self-deceptive behavior. By engaging in self-reflection and introspection, we can start to unravel the web of lies that we have woven around ourselves. We can begin to see the truth more clearly and to make choices that are aligned with our values and principles. This process is not easy, and it may require the support of others, such as a mentor or a therapist, to help us navigate the difficult terrain of self-discovery. In the end, overcoming self-deception is a journey towards greater self-awareness and authenticity. It is a process of stripping away the layers of falsehood that have obscured our vision and prevented us from living in truth. Through self-reflection and introspection, we can start to see ourselves and the world around us more clearly, and to break free from the chains of self-deception that have kept us trapped for so long.
