Let go of attachments and expectations from "summary" of How To Be a Stoic by Epictetus,Seneca,Marcus Aurelius

Epictetus and Seneca both emphasize the importance of letting go of attachments and expectations in order to achieve a state of tranquility and inner peace. Attachments can come in many forms - material possessions, relationships, or even our own egos. We become attached to these things because we believe they are necessary for our happiness. However, according to the Stoics, this attachment is what ultimately leads to suffering. When we are attached to something, we become vulnerable to losing it, which in turn causes us anxiety and distress. Similarly, expectations can also cause us unnecessary suffering. When we have expectations about how things should be, we set ourselves up for disappointment when reality does not meet those expectations. This can lead to frustration, anger, and dissatisfaction with our lives. By letting go of attachments and expectations, we free ourselves from these negative emotions. We learn to accept things as they are, rather than how we wish them to be. This does not mean that we should become indifferent or apathetic, but rather that we should approach life with a sense of detachment and equanimity. In doing so, we are better able to navigate life's ups and downs with grace and resilience. We are no longer at the mercy of external circumstances, but rather can find true freedom and happiness from within. It is through this practice of letting go that we can cultivate a sense of peace and contentment that is not dependent on outside factors.
