The ability to recognize and understand our emotions is the starting point of emotional intelligence. Without self-awareness, we are like a ship adrift at sea, tossed about by the changing tides of our feelings. When we lack awareness of our emotions, we are unable to control or manage them effectively. This can lead to impulsive reactions, conflicts with others, and a general sense of being out of control. Self-awareness involves paying attention to our thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations in order to better understand why we react the way we do in different situations. It requires us to be honest with ourselves about our strengths and weaknesses, as well as our likes and dislikes. By being aware of our emotional patterns, triggers, and tendencies, we can begin to make more intentional choices about how we respond to the world around us.
