Shame thrives on secrecy and silence from "summary" of Daring Greatly : How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead by Brene Brown

Shame is a powerful emotion that can have a profound impact on our lives. It has the ability to consume us, to make us feel small and insignificant. Shame thrives on secrecy and silence. It grows in the shadows, feeding off our fear of being exposed. When we keep our shame hidden, it festers and grows, becoming more powerful over time. When we keep our shame to ourselves, we deny ourselves the opportunity to heal and grow. By keeping our shame hidden, we are allowing it to control us, to dictate how we live our lives. Shame thrives on secrecy and silence because it relies on our fear of being vulnerable, of showing our true selves to others. When we hide our shame, we are denying ourselves the chance to connect with others in a meaningful way. In order to overcome shame, we must be willing to confront it head-on. We must be brave enough to be vulnerable, to share our shame with others. When we bring our shame into the light, we take away its power. By sharing our shame with others, we allow ourselves to be seen and heard, to connect with others on a deeper level. Shame thrives on secrecy and silence because it isolates us from others. It makes us feel alone and unworthy of love and connection. When we keep our shame hidden, we are denying ourselves the chance to be truly known by others. We are denying ourselves the chance to be seen and accepted for who we truly are. In order to break free from shame, we must be willing to be open and vulnerable with others. We must be willing to share our shame and allow ourselves to be seen. When we do this, we take away shame's power over us. We allow ourselves to be truly seen and accepted for who we are.
