Vulnerability is not weakness; it is our most accurate measure of courage. When we shut ourselves off from vulnerability, we distance ourselves from the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. We cannot selectively numb emotions; when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions. In order to experience true joy, we must be willing to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is at the core of all emotions - the emotions that we want to feel and the ones that we try to avoid. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities. We can form deeper connections with others, cultivate empathy, and live wholeheartedly.
