Importance of spiritual knowledge from "summary" of Bhagavad-Gita As It Is by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Spiritual knowledge is described as the most important knowledge in the Bhagavad-Gita. This knowledge is not ordinary knowledge that one can acquire from textbooks or academic institutions; rather, it is transcendental knowledge that pertains to the eternal soul or self. In the material world, people are often preoccupied with acquiring material knowledge, which is temporary and limited. However, spiritual knowledge is eternal and can lead one to liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The Bhagavad-Gita emphasizes the importance of spiritual knowledge by stating that it is the key to self-realization and ultimate happiness. Without spiritual knowledge, one remains in ignorance and is subject to the cycle of birth and death. By understanding the eternal nature of the soul and its relationship with the Supreme Soul, one can attain liberation and eternal bliss. Spiritual knowledge is not easily acquired; it requires humility, sincerity, and a willingness to learn from a bona fide spiritual master. The Bhagavad-Gita stresses the importance of approaching a spiritual master with a submissive attitude and a desire to learn. Only through the guidance of a realized soul can one truly understand the depths of spiritual knowledge and its application in one's life. Furthermore, spiritual knowledge is not simply theoretical; it must be applied in one's daily life through devotional service to the Supreme Lord. By engaging in acts of devotion, such as chanting the holy names of the Lord and serving His devotees, one can cultivate spiritual knowledge and gradually transcend the material world.- The Bhagavad-Gita teaches that spiritual knowledge is the most valuable treasure one can possess. It is the key to liberation and eternal happiness. By cultivating spiritual knowledge through the guidance of a spiritual master and engaging in devotional service to the Supreme Lord, one can attain the ultimate goal of life – self-realization and eternal bliss.
