Our habits shape our identity from "summary" of Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin
One of the most important ideas to understand is the powerful connection between habits and identity. Our habits shape our identity because they reflect the choices we make consistently. Every time we choose to do something, we are reinforcing a particular aspect of our identity. For example, if we regularly choose to exercise, we start to see ourselves as someone who values fitness and health. On the other hand, if we consistently choose to procrastinate, we may start to see ourselves as lazy or unreliable. When we examine our habits, we are really examining our values, priorities, and beliefs. Our habits reveal what is important to us and what we prioritize in our lives. For instance, if we consistently choose to spend time with our family, it shows that we value our relationships and prioritize connection. Conversely, if we consistently choose to work late and neglect our personal life, it may indicate that we prioritize career success over personal relationships. Changing our habits can be a powerful way to shape our identity. By intentionally choosing new habits that align with the identity we want to have, we can gradually transform ourselves into the person we aspire to be. For example, if we want to see ourselves as a creative individual, we can establish a habit of engaging in creative activities regularly. Over time, this new habit can reinforce our identity as a creative person.- In turn, change our identity. By being mindful of the habits we cultivate and intentionally choosing habits that align with our desired identity, we can shape ourselves into the person we want to be. Ultimately, our habits play a significant role in shaping our identity and determining the kind of person we become.
