Convenience can make or break a habit from "summary" of Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin
The ease with which we can engage in a habit plays a significant role in whether we will stick with it or not. When a habit is convenient to do, we are more likely to follow through consistently. For example, if we have a gym membership at a location that is close to our home or workplace, it's much simpler to incorporate exercise into our daily routine. On the other hand, if we have to drive across town to get to the gym, we may be more inclined to skip workouts. Convenience can also be a factor in breaking a bad habit. For instance, if we keep unhealthy snacks readily available in our kitchen, we are more likely to indulge in them mindlessly. However, if we make it inconvenient to access these snacks by keeping them out of sight or replacing them with healthier options, we are less likely to give in to temptation. To make a habit more convenient, we can employ strategies such as setting up our environment to support our desired behavior. This could involve placing our running shoes by the door so that we are reminded to go for a run, or keeping a water bottle at our desk to encourage hydration throughout the day. By making the desired behavior as easy as possible to do, we increase the likelihood of it becoming a habit. On the other hand, we can make it more difficult to engage in a bad habit by creating obstacles that prevent us from falling into familiar patterns. For example, if we are trying to cut back on social media scrolling, we can delete the apps from our phone or use website blockers to limit our access. By making the undesired behavior less convenient to engage in, we are less likely to give in to temptation.- The level of convenience associated with a habit can play a crucial role in whether we are successful in adopting or breaking it. By understanding the impact of convenience on our behavior, we can make conscious choices to set ourselves up for success in forming positive habits and breaking negative ones.
