True behavior change is identity change from "summary" of Atomic Habits: Perubahan Kecil yang memberikan hasil luar biasa by James Clear

True behavior change is identity change. Many people try to change their habits by focusing on what they want to achieve. They set goals, make plans, and push themselves to get there. However, this approach often fails because it only addresses the surface level of behavior. In order to create lasting change, you must first change your identity. Your identity is the beliefs you hold about yourself. It is the image you have of who you are and what you are capable of. When you change your identity, you change the way you see yourself. This, in turn, changes the way you behave. Your habits are not just actions you take; they are reflections of the person you believe yourself to be. For example, if you see yourself as a healthy person, you are more likely to make choices that align with that identity. You will choose to eat nutritious foods, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. On the other hand, if you see yourself as someone who struggles with their health, you are more likely to make choices that reinforce that belief. You may choose to eat junk food, skip workouts, and stay up late. Changing your identity is not easy, but it is necessary if you want to truly change your behavior. You must start by examining the beliefs you hold about yourself and challenging them. Ask yourself why you see yourself in a certain way and whether those beliefs are serving you. Then, work on creating a new identity that aligns with the person you want to become. As you begin to change your identity, your habits will naturally follow suit. You will find it easier to make choices that support your new self-image because they will feel like a natural extension of who you are. In the end, true behavior change is not about what you do; it is about who you are.
