Master the art of habit formation from "summary" of Atomic Habits by James Clear

To master the art of habit formation, you need to understand how habits work. Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. They seem to make little difference on any given day and yet the impact they deliver over the months and years can be enormous. Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. Put another way, habits form the foundation of your identity. The key to building lasting habits is focusing on creating a new identity first. Your habits are how you embody your identity. True behavior change is identity change. You might start a habit because of motivation, but the only reason you'll stick with one is that it becomes part of your identity. The goal is not to read a book, the goal is to become a reader. The goal is not to run a marathon, the goal is to become a runner. Your habits are how you reinforce the beliefs you have about yourself. If you want to change how you see yourself, then you need to change your habits. The most effective way to change your habits is to focus not on what you want to achieve, but on who you wish to become. Your identity emerges out of your habits. Every action is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. Use habits to build the identity of the person you wish to become.
