Testes produce sperm and hormones in males from "summary" of Anatomy & Physiology by Kevin T. Patton
The testes are the primary reproductive organs in males, responsible for producing sperm and hormones. Sperm production, also known as spermatogenesis, occurs within the seminiferous tubules of the testes. Sperm cells develop from spermatogonia through a series of mitotic and meiotic divisions. Eventually, mature sperm cells are released into the lumen of the seminiferous tubules. In addition to sperm production, the testes also play a crucial role in hormone production. Leydig cells, which are located in the connective tissue surrounding the seminiferous tubules, produce testosterone. Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone and is responsible for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics, such as facial hair, deep voice, and muscle mass. Testosterone also plays a role in maintaining libido, or sex drive, as well as regulating sperm production. In the presence of testosterone, sperm cells mature and gain the ability to fertilize an egg. Testosterone levels are regulated by a negative feedback loop involving the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. The hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which stimulates the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). LH stimulates the Leydig cells to produce testosterone, while FSH stimulates the Sertoli cells within the seminiferous tubules to support sperm production.- The testes play a vital role in male reproduction by producing sperm and hormones essential for fertility and sexual development. By understanding the intricate processes involved in testicular function, we can appreciate the complexity of the male reproductive system and the importance of maintaining its proper functioning.
