Social cognition is fundamental to human thinking from "summary" of A Natural History of Human Thinking by Michael Tomasello

Human beings are unique in many ways, but one of the most striking features that sets us apart from other species is our ability to think and reason in complex ways. This ability, known as human thinking, is what allows us to solve problems, make decisions, and create new ideas. However, what is often overlooked is the role that social cognition plays in shaping our thinking processes. Social cognition refers to the way in which we perceive, interpret, and understand the thoughts and feelings of others. This ability is crucial for successful social interactions, as it allows us to predict and respond to the behavior of those around us. In fact, social cognition is so fundamental to human thinking that it influences almost every aspect of our cognitive processes. From a very young age, human beings are constantly engaged in social interactions with others. These interactions help us to develop a sense of self, as well as an understanding of the minds of those around us. This process begins in infancy, as babies learn to interpret the emotional cues of their caregivers and respond accordingly. As we grow older, our social cognition becomes more sophisticated, allowing us to navigate the complexities of social relationships and understand the intentions of others. One of the key aspects of social cognition is the ability to engage in joint attention with others. Joint attention refers to the shared focus on an object or event between individuals, and it is a crucial component of human communication. By engaging in joint attention, we are able to coordinate our thoughts and actions with those of others, leading to a shared understanding of the world around us. Another important aspect of social cognition is the ability to understand the intentions and beliefs of others. This skill, known as theory of mind, allows us to infer the mental states of those around us and predict their behavior accordingly. For example, when we see someone reaching for a glass of water, we can infer that they are thirsty and offer them a drink. This ability to understand and respond to the mental states of others is essential for successful social interactions.
  1. Social cognition is a fundamental aspect of human thinking that shapes the way we perceive and understand the world around us. By developing our social cognition skills, we are able to engage in complex social interactions, understand the intentions of others, and coordinate our thoughts and actions with those of our peers. Ultimately, it is through our social interactions that we are able to develop and shape our thinking processes, leading to the uniquely human ability to reason and problem-solve.
