Surrender to the flow of life from "summary" of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki
When we talk about surrendering to the flow of life, we are talking about the principle of nonresistance. This principle is deeply rooted in Zen practice, as it teaches us to let go of our need to control every aspect of our lives. By surrendering to the flow of life, we allow ourselves to be carried along by the natural currents of existence, rather than constantly struggling against them. In Zen, we are taught to embrace impermanence and change as fundamental aspects of reality. When we resist the flow of life, we are essentially fighting against the very nature of existence. Instead of resisting, we are encouraged to accept and adapt to whatever comes our way. This does not mean that we should passively accept everything that happens to us, but rather that we should approach life with an open mind and a willingness to learn from our experiences. Surrendering to the flow of life requires us to let go of our attachments and expectations. When we cling too tightly to our desires and preferences, we create unnecessary suffering for ourselves. By releasing our attachments, we free ourselves from the burdens of the past and the anxieties of the future. This allows us to fully immerse ourselves in the present moment, where we can find true peace and contentment. In Zen practice, we are encouraged to cultivate a sense of mindfulness and awareness in everything we do. By staying present and attentive, we can more easily adapt to the changing circumstances of life. This requires us to let go of our preconceived notions and judgments, and to approach each moment with a beginner's mind. When we surrender to the flow of life in this way, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and insights that we may have otherwise overlooked.- Surrendering to the flow of life is about learning to trust in the wisdom of the universe. By relinquishing our need for control and surrendering to the natural order of things, we can find a sense of peace and harmony that transcends our individual desires and fears. This practice requires patience, humility, and a willingness to let go of our egos. But in doing so, we can discover a profound sense of freedom and liberation that comes from truly letting go.
