The fundamental idea that underlies all spiritual teachings is the recognition that clinging to attachments leads to suffering. We are constantly seeking security and permanence in a world that is inherently impermanent. The more we try to hold on to things, whether they be material possessions, relationships, or beliefs, the more we find ourselves trapped in a cycle of anxiety and fear. In our quest for security, we create a false sense of self that is dependent on these attachments. We identify ourselves with our possessions, our relationships, and our beliefs, believing that they define who we are.
