Human beings have a deep-seated desire to be in control of their lives, to know what will happen next and to avoid uncertainty. This desire is rooted in our instinct for self-preservation and has been reinforced by cultural conditioning over many generations. We are taught from a young age that we must plan for the future, set goals, and take decisive action to achieve success. We are told that we must be in control of our emotions, our relationships, and our environment in order to be happy and secure. This tendency to seek control is understandable, but it is also fundamentally flawed. The reality is that life is inherently uncertain and unpredictable. No matter how much we plan and prepare, we cannot guarantee that things will turn out the way we want them to. The more we try to control every aspect of our lives, the more frustrated and anxious we become when things inevitably do not go according to plan.
