Chronic stress is a pervasive issue in our modern society. It can stem from a variety of sources, such as work pressures, financial woes, or relationship troubles. When faced with chronic stress, our bodies react in ways that were originally meant to deal with short-term physical threats. This response involves the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which can be beneficial in the short run. However, problems arise when stress becomes a chronic condition. The body's stress response is designed to be a short-term solution to immediate threats. When faced with a predator, for example, the stress response can help us either fight or flee. In the case of zebras, this stress response is activated only when they are being chased by a lion. Once the threat is gone, the stress response shuts off, allowing the zebra to return to a state of relaxation. Humans, on the other hand, often experience stress that is not as easily resolved.
