Chronic stress can lead to health problems from "summary" of Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers by Robert M. Sapolsky

Chronic stress is a pervasive issue in our modern society. It can stem from a variety of sources, such as work pressures, financial woes, or relationship troubles. When faced with chronic stress, our bodies react in ways that were originally meant to deal with short-term physical threats. This response involves the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which can be beneficial in the short run. However, problems arise when stress becomes a chronic condition. The body's stress response is designed to be a short-term solution to immediate threats. When faced with a predator, for example, the stress response can help us either fight or flee. In the case of zebras, this stress response is activated only when they are being chased by a lion. Once the threat is gone, the stress response shuts off, allowing the zebra to return to a state of relaxation. Humans, on the other hand, often experience stress that is not as easily resolved. Work deadlines, traffic jams, and family conflicts can all trigger the stress response, leading to a constant state of arousal. This chronic activation of the stress response can have detrimental effects on our health. Over time, the wear and tear caused by chronic stress can lead to a host of health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and weakened immune function. One of the key factors contributing to the negative health effects of chronic stress is the prolonged elevation of stress hormones like cortisol. While cortisol is essential for survival in the short term, high levels of this hormone over an extended period can be damaging. For example, cortisol can suppress the immune system, making us more susceptible to infections. It can also contribute to the development of conditions like obesity and diabetes. In addition to the direct effects of stress hormones, chronic stress can also lead to unhealthy coping behaviors. Many people turn to alcohol, tobacco, or unhealthy foods as a way to cope with stress. These behaviors can further exacerbate the negative health effects of chronic stress, creating a vicious cycle that is difficult to break.
