Chronic stress can lead to burnout from "summary" of Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers by Robert M. Sapolsky

Chronic stress, as we all know, can wreak havoc on our bodies and minds. When we are constantly bombarded with stressors, our bodies are pushed to their limits. Our stress response system, which is designed to protect us in times of danger, becomes overworked and exhausted. The constant release of stress hormones can lead to a whole host of problems, from high blood pressure to a weakened immune system. But perhaps one of the most insidious effects of chronic stress is burnout. Burnout is not just feeling tired or overwhelmed. It is a state of complete emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. It is the feeling that you have nothing left to give, that you are running on empty. Burnout can affect all aspects of your life - your work, your relationships, and your health. The interesting thing about burnout is that it is not just caused by one particularly stressful event. It is the result of prolonged exposure to stress. It is the cumulative effect of all those little stressors piling up day after day. And because burnout creeps up on you slowly, you may not even realize it until it is too late. One of the reasons why chronic stress can lead to burnout is that our bodies are simply not built to handle constant stress. Our stress response system is designed to help us deal with short-term threats, like a lion chasing us. But when stress becomes chronic, our bodies never get a chance to return to a state of calm. Our stress response system is constantly activated, leading to a state of chronic arousal. In addition, chronic stress can also deplete our internal resources. When we are constantly in fight-or-flight mode, our bodies divert resources away from other important functions, like digestion and reproduction. This can lead to a whole host of health problems, from digestive issues to hormonal imbalances. So, when we talk about chronic stress leading to burnout, we are talking about a process that takes place over time. It is not just one stressful event that causes burnout, but the accumulation of stress over weeks, months, or even years. And if we do not take steps to manage our stress levels, burnout may be waiting just around the corner.
