Repressing emotions can lead to chronic pain from "summary" of When the Body Says No by Gabor Maté, MD

When we ignore our emotions, our bodies do not forget. The mind-body connection is a powerful force, and repressed emotions can manifest physically as chronic pain. This occurs because our bodies are always trying to communicate with us. When we suppress our feelings, whether it be anger, sadness, or fear, our bodies bear the burden of these unexpressed emotions. This can lead to a range of health issues, including chronic pain. Our bodies are equipped with a stress response system that is designed to protect us in times of danger. However, when this system is constantly activated due to repressed emotions, it can have detrimental effects on our health. Chronic stress can lead to inflammation in the body, which is a key factor in the development of various types of pain. This is because stress hormones can weaken the immune system, making us more susceptible to pain. Moreover, when we push down our emotions, we are essentially denying a fundamental aspect of our humanity. Emotions are a natural part of being human, and when we deny them, we are denying ourselves. This internal conflict can create a sense of dissonance within us, which can exacerbate physical symptoms such as pain. In addition, repressing emotions can also affect our relationships with others. When we are unable to express our true feelings, it can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts with those around us. This can further contribute to our stress levels, perpetuating the cycle of chronic pain.
  1. It is important to acknowledge and express our emotions in a healthy way. By allowing ourselves to feel and process our emotions, we can prevent the buildup of stress in our bodies and reduce the likelihood of developing chronic pain. Our bodies are wise and resilient, but they need to be listened to and cared for. It is only by honoring our emotions that we can truly heal and live a pain-free life.
