Expressing emotions can prevent disease from "summary" of When the Body Says No by Gabor Maté
The idea that feelings have an impact on health is not new. It has been recognized for centuries that emotional states can influence physical wellbeing. Ancient healing traditions have long emphasized the importance of the mind-body connection. Modern medical research is now confirming what these traditions have long understood: stress, emotions, and health are closely linked. When we suppress our emotions, when we hold back our true feelings, we are creating a state of inner turmoil. This inner turmoil can manifest itself in a variety of ways, including physical illness. The body does not distinguish between emotional and physical stress - it simply responds to stress in whatever form it takes. So when we fail to express our emotions, when we bury our feelings deep inside, we are putting ourselves at risk for disease. Chronic emotional stress, whether from unresolved trauma, repressed anger, or unexpressed grief, can take a toll on the body over time. Our immune system weakens, our nervous system becomes dysregulated, and our bodies become more susceptible to illness. Studies have shown that individuals who suppress their emotions are more likely to develop a range of health conditions, including autoimmune disorders, cancer, and heart disease. In order to maintain good health, it is essential that we learn how to express our emotions in a healthy way. This does not mean that we should unleash our feelings without restraint, but rather that we should find constructive ways to process and release our emotions. Talking to a therapist, journaling, practicing mindfulness, and engaging in creative activities are all ways in which we can express our emotions in a safe and effective manner.- We are allowing ourselves to release pent-up energy, to let go of negativity, and to create space for healing. We are giving our bodies the opportunity to relax, to rebalance, and to return to a state of equilibrium. In doing so, we are not only preventing disease, but we are also promoting overall health and wellbeing. The connection between emotions and health is a powerful one, and by honoring this connection, we can truly listen to what our bodies are trying to tell us.
