Trauma is stored in the body from "summary" of Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma by Peter A. Levine,Ph.D.
Trauma is not just something that happens in the mind - it is stored in the body as well. When a person experiences a traumatic event, their body's natural response is to go into a state of fight, flight, or freeze. This response is meant to help the individual survive the threat they are facing. In the animal kingdom, animals are able to discharge this energy once the threat has passed. They shake, tremble, and move their bodies in specific ways to release the stored energy that was created during the traumatic event. This discharge allows them to return to a state of balance and relaxation. However, humans often do not allow themselves to fully discharge this energy. Instead, they may suppress their natural responses out of fear, shame, or societal conditioning. This leads to the energy becoming trapped in the body, where it can manifest as physical symptoms such as chronic pain, anxiety, or even illness. By understanding that trauma is stored in the body, individuals can begin to work towards releasing this trapped energy. This can be done through various somatic techniques that help to gently and safely discharge the stored energy. When this energy is released, individuals may experience a sense of relief, relaxation, and a greater sense of well-being. It is important for individuals to recognize that healing trauma is not just about talking through the event or processing it cognitively. It is about allowing the body to release the stored energy so that it can return to a state of balance and wholeness. By acknowledging the role of the body in trauma healing, individuals can begin to take steps towards true healing and recovery.Similar Posts
