Coping mechanisms developed in response to toxic parenting may need to be reevaluated as an adult from "summary" of Toxic Parents by Susan Forward

When we grow up in a toxic environment, we often develop coping mechanisms to survive. These coping mechanisms may have been necessary for us as children, but as adults, they may no longer serve us well. We may find ourselves still using these old strategies even though they no longer benefit us. For example, if we grew up in a household where emotions were not allowed to be expressed, we may have learned to suppress our feelings as a way to protect ourselves. This may have helped us survive in that environment, but as adults, it can lead to emotional numbness and an inability to connect with others on a deep level. Similarly, if we were raised by parents who were overly critical or demanding, we may have learned to be perfectionists in order to gain their approval. As adults, this can lead to chronic stress and burnout as we strive for unattainable standards of perfection. In order to break free from these old patterns, we need to reevaluate the coping mechanisms we developed in response to toxic parenting. We need to ask ourselves if these strategies are still serving us or if they are holding us back. It can be difficult to let go of old habits, even when we know they are no longer helpful, but it is necessary for our growth and healing. Reevaluating our coping mechanisms requires self-awareness and a willingness to change. It may also require seeking support from a therapist or counselor who can help us navigate this process. By letting go of old patterns that no longer serve us, we can create space for new, healthier ways of being in the world.
